Palud is swamp area, around 10 km far from Rovinj, rich with swamp vegetation and birds, turtles, eels...

There are many cultural traditions kept in Rovinj every year. Since 1967. art manifestation has been kept. Rovinj has Native museum in old palace Califfa. It was founded in 1954. Most important part of Rovinj is the Old Town, which is protected. You can see many Gothic, Baroque balconies, streets, roofs... Houses and streets are tight and compacted. Rovinj had 7 town gates, but three are preserved. HISTORY


Rovinj was first time mentioned as Castrum Rubini in picce Cosmographia in 7th century. It is believed that Rovinj was founded sometime between 3th and 5th century, but this area was inhabitated since Prehistory, when Histris lived here. Rovinj used to be protected from the sea by cliffs and with walls from the mainland. In 10th and 11th century German feudal families inhabitated Rovinj. In 1188. Rovinj started trading with Dubrovnik. In 1283. it got under the rule of Venetia, like many towns in Istria. In 15th century Rovinj had its Statut divided on the three books. Sea business started to develope. During the time of Turk attacks many refuges came to Istria and number of inhabitants was growing. Walls had been built in order to protect Rovinj from the Turks. In 1650. Rovinj was spreding outside of the walls. In 1763. canal was buried and Rovinj became town on peninsula. At the time of Austrian-Hungarian domination, Rovinj was developing in culture, economy and sea business. In 1947. by convention in Paris, Rovinj was adjoined to Croatia, which at the time was a part of Yugoslavia. In 1991. it became part of Independent Republic of Croatia.

LOCATION AND CLIMATE


Rovinj (Istria, Croatia) is a small town on west coast of Croatian peninsula Istria. Rovinj has around 15000 inhabitants. Rovinj has two settlements: Rovinj (Rovigno) and Rovinj Village (Villa di Rovigno). Area of Rovinj has size of 80 km2. Climate is Mediterranean with average year temperature 16 C°. Rovinj has around 2400 sunny hours a year. In Rovinj there are protected parks and objects of nature: many islets, sea from Lim Canal to Lim Draga, swamp Palud, Romuald Cave, quarry Cave di Monifiorenzo...
